1. Tyler shared with me the effects of deforestation and reforestation. The big concept that I got from Tyler was that after testing the Carbon:Nitrogen ratio, reforestation is shown to increase not only Carbon and Nitrogen availability in the soil, but also to increase the biodiversity in the forest. This is crucial because at the current rate of deforesting 13 million hectares per year, we have got to find a solution.
2. Jacob shared with me about the effects of removing certain microbe species from the soil. His biggest point was that even if one specific species was removed from the microbial community, the function provided is still provided by another microbe in the community. SOIL IS RESILIENT!
3. Pete explained that through his study, research shows that it is the water itself that is the limiting factor in biomass of microbial communities, not necessarily the nutrients available in their ecosystem.
4. My last speed date was with Patrick who explained the effects of leguminous species in the forest. He described how the legumes are not necessarily a solution for post-climate change effects and post-fire effects, but more of an indicator of what is going on in the soil after these disturbances.
